Yesterday we talked about the most common type of hypertension: primary hypertension. Today we see the causes and risk factors in the development of secondary hypertension.

This type of hypertension suffer 20% of hypertensives and the most important cause of disease or appearance is a health situation that favors development.

Among the risk factors for secondary hypertension are:

Toxemia in pregnancy, ie the emergence of high pressure in pregnant women with no medical history of hypertension in your family.

Stress is another factor that can lead to secondary hypertension, as well as workaholism and hyperactivity.

Self-medication with steroids or oral contraceptives without medical supervision.

Renal disease and hypothyroidism.

In all these factors we see a common factor as in primary hypertension: a person suffering from diseases that are not treated with a balanced diet and regular physical activity is exposed not only to develop the disease, but they suffer high blood pressure increases the risk of stroke.

Also any type of hypertension involves not only medication and diet restricted in sodium, but a positive attitude by the patient to this condition which is directly related to the nervous condition of the person.

We know that our body ingests and produces two types of lipids: cholesterol and triglycerides. When levels of any of these blood fats we are looking at a picture of hyperlipidemia. This means that the altered levels of cholesterol or triglycerides in the blood is hyperlipidemia.

This picture may be inherited or occur as a result of an unbalanced diet rich in fats.

The types of hyperlipidaemia are:

Hypercholesterolaemia: Increased low density lipoprotein (LDL), what we call bad cholesterol. Bad cholesterol unlike the good (HDL, LDL) in the body travels in the opposite direction from the liver to other tissues. When there is excess cholesterol in the blood is deposited in the arteries and that’s when we have the risk of heart disease by clogging.

Hypertriglyceridemia: the increase of triglycerides in the blood. Most of this accumulation of excess fat in the liver is deteriorating and its functions. Most people with hypertriglyceridemia or advanced diabetes are overweight.

The medical treatment of hyperlipidaemia should be accompanied by a low-calorie meal plan, with foods rich in soluble fiber-type plant that will help reduce the level of blood lipids.

In Nutrition we’ve seen what food choices that help reduce bad cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as foods that are banned for these diseases. Remember to serve with a low consumption of sweets, sugars and soft drinks, which may also be present trans fats.

These factors may affect fatal development during the first trimester of pregnancy. Although early ultrasound scans can help identify risk in infants.

However preterm or low birth weight babies tend to develop rapidly after birth, which can cause obesity in these children.

Hypertension and elevated red blood cell level are also associated with a smaller skull length. The second case can occur if the mother is dehydrated, smoke or have some type of heart disease. And mothers who did not take folic acid during pregnancy also tend to have smaller fetuses in the first three months of pregnancy.

If you’re around 40, you smoke, clouds stress and eat poorly, it’s time to stop the car a bit of your metabolism and begin to think about your diet and your health.

This is the most vulnerable age for the onset of hypertension, ie, the pressure exerted by blood on the walls of arteries. High blood pressure is a risk factor for having a heart attack or stroke, so we must start early to avoid some symptoms.

It is true that some people are predisposed to having high blood pressure or inherited specific physical conditions, but the advance of hypertension can be controlled or prevented (in people without bias) with these simple tips:

Have the proper weight: avoid high-fat diet and gradually start to eat low-fat products and more fruits and vegetables. Being in the right weight causes the body to make less effort to stand.

Reducing salt in foods and choose low salt products. Reduce consumption of cured meats, preserves, pickles or reduces the amount eaten per week. Remember that 3 grams of salt is what our body needs.

Replace salt with garlic, spices and dressings to spice up the dishes or consuming industrial salts that you recommend a nutritionist or doctor.

Perform daily physical exercise at least 30 minutes a day combined exercise or walk, best if you do a sport like swimming. This is to help maintain your weight and blood circulation.

Drink alcohol in moderation, the better the wine, which is the noblest spirit: remember no more than 2 drinks per day.

Experts call for a more generic intervention to prevent cardiovascular events in people at high risk, and also recommend smoking cessation and reducing salt intake

More than 200 experts in hypertension have gathered in Seville to celebrate Hypertension Annual Meeting organized by the Spanish Society of Cardiology (ESC). At the meeting were released the results of several studies related to the treatment of hypertension (HTA) conducted in primary care and cardiology services, an example of these is the TABARCA study that analyzes the influence of snuff in cardiovascular complications in patients admitted to hospital for an acute coronary syndrome.

Another central thrust of the meeting has been prevention in patients at high risk if, as says Dr. Pilar Mazon, president of the Hypertension Section of the SEC, “we must move towards a more vigorous intervention, both pharmacological as reinforcing the changes in lifestyle, with special emphasis on the abandonment of snuff, including smoking cessation drugs. It should consider the cardiovascular risk in a comprehensive manner, taking into account renal function and extracardiac vascular level.

Along with diabetes, hypertension is a major cardiovascular risk factors, the most prevalent and which is attributed to higher mortality directly associated with increased ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and renal failure.

The future of hypertension is not encouraging. For the year 2025 is expected to increase 24 percent in the prevalence of the disease in developed countries. In fact, after 65 years, more than 2 / 3 of the Spanish population is affected by the disease. Still, there is increasing information about the problem, “most people care to know their blood pressure numbers and a higher percentage of hypertensive patients undergoing treatment and are well controlled.”

The causes of hypertension are varied and depend on what kind of hypertension is concerned. Today we will talk of primary hypertension, which is what they have 80% of people.

In primary hypertension the cause is unknown and there is a specific disease that caused it is believed that there is a genetic component and / or inherited responsibility for it.

This type of hypertension is influenced by different factors interacting with genetic susceptibility to increase blood pressure. Common factors in primary hypertension are:

Modifiable through appropriate treatment: here are relevant overweight and obesity, bad cholesterol and lack of physical activity daily. In addition there are risk factors such as consumption of more than 90 ml of alcohol daily and a diet with too much salt and sodium.

Does not affect: the factors that you can not control in primary hypertension is the history of cardiovascular disease in parents or grandparents. These factors are inherited by males than females.

If we had a table of primary hypertension, we know what factors you can control, they all have to do with a diet restricted in sodium and high fat foods, along with physical activity to maintain normal blood.
