The nervous system plays an important role in increasing the body’s blood pressure . One of the most significant examples is when there is increased during muscular exercise.

During intense exercise the muscles need a lot of much greater blood flow . Part of this increase is due to local vasodilation of the muscle vasculature caused by increased metabolism of the myocytes (muscle cells).

Other increases occur as a result of elevated blood pressure sympathetic sympathetic stimulation caused by the circulation during exercise overall. In the more intense exercise may increase blood pressure by 30% -40% , which increases blood flow almost twice more.

The increase in blood pressure during exercise is due mainly to the following effect: while the motor areas are activated to initiate the exercise brain also activates most of the reticular activating system of the brain stem, including stimulation much greater vasoconstrictor and cardioaccelerator areas of the vasomotor center. This increase in blood pressure is a snap to maintain synchronization with increased muscle activity .

Are many other types of stress also produced a similar increase in pressure . For example, during the intense fear of blood pressure can increase up to twice normal in just a few seconds, which is known as alarm reaction.

- So also among best less alcohol since their habitual abuse can contribute to the development and maintenance of hypertension.

On the other hand there are some medications that alter the pressure as NSAIDs, oral contraceptives, sympathomimetics and steroids.

Bad news
There are three “bad news” about high blood pressure (hypertension). First, any increase in blood pressure increases the risk of having a heart attack, but this does not mean you will have a heart attack. Second, there are more than 50 million Americans with this important medical condition, and one in two people over 60 high blood pressure. Third, many men and women do not even know they have high blood pressure because they just have symptoms, especially in the early stages.

Good news
If you already know you have high blood pressure and is an important first step. There are different ways and easy to control your blood pressure and therefore reduce their risk of stroke. Mortality rates for heart attacks in the U.S. have declined by 40-60% over the past 20 years, partly due to more effective control of blood pressure.

Your Choices
Your choice of trying to lower blood pressure and use physical activity as part of your treatment depends on how high is your blood pressure. If you have a blood pressure (systolic value greater than 180 or diastolic value greater than 110), treatment should be by medications. Once your blood pressure is under control, physical activity can lower your blood pressure even more. Exercise can also decrease the need for medications, but usually not completely eliminated. You should contact your doctor before starting a physical activity to be sure of exercise recommended for you. Currently recommended as initial therapy for people with small or mid-rises in blood pressure change (3 to 6 months) in lifestyle towards healthier behaviors – including physical activity, decreasing the salt in foods, and losing but -. However, you should consult your doctor to be sure that these recommendations are applicable to you.

What Can You Expect?
Exercise generally decreases systolic and diastolic value about 10 puntos. No is necessary to exercise for years to lower your blood pressure – you can even see the results after three to four weeks of training. Unfortunately for most people, a 10-point reduction is not sufficient to achieve a normal blood pressure, but higher levels of physical activity have benefits beyond blood pressure reduction. Exercise also helps control weight and improves cholesterol levels and blood glucose so that the risk of having a heart attack is lower, even if your blood pressure does not decrease to normal levels. Hypertensive individuals who are active and fit have lower mortality rates than their sedentary counterparts. Being more active is also beneficial for people with slightly high blood pressure (systolic 130 to 139 and diastolic pressures of 80 to 89) and those with normal blood pressure have a family history of hypertension. These individuals are more likely to develop hypertension in the future. The regular exercise can help prevent blood pressure from becoming a chronic problem.

How should exercise? There is no magical exercise to lower blood pressure. Many activities of daily living will have an effect – walking and climbing stairs for example. Other activities are also beneficial can be incorporated into your daily life, such as running, swimming, cycling … Nor do they have to be exhausted to lower your blood pressure. In fact, gentle exercise such as walking, can reduce blood pressure even more than more demanding activities such as running. A simple rule to follow is that physical activity should elevate your heart rate and breathing, to the point where he can still hold a conversation while doing the activity. You should consult your doctor before starting an exercise program more demanding (such as running), while a softer exercise like walking is good for heart health of almost everyone.

You need not change your life completely to incorporate the required amount of daily physical activity. A recent statement by prestigious institutions in the field of physical activity and health (ACSM and CDC) recommend that must accumulate 30 minutes or more of physical activity most days of the week. While some blood pressure medications can have negative side effects, side effects are generally positive exercise – weight control, improved blood sugar and cholesterol … When you make exercise can have injuries, but these risks are minimal if not disproportionately performed at the beginning and progresses slowly.

The details.
Most of us find it difficult to invest more time to exercise on a day that already we have taken – though this will help us improve our health. However, the physical activity required to lower blood pressure can be done without major changes in the way of life. Park your car at the other end of the parking lot, so you can walk to work. During the day, avoid the elevator and go up the stairs. In the afternoon or the weekend, take your children or nephews to the park, field or beach walking. On the weekends too hot, cold or rain, 30-minute walk through an area covered as a mall.

In short …
The good news is that any amount of physical activity is better than no physical activity and even low-intensity activities like walking, can lower your blood pressure. More exercise probably will not make your blood pressure is completely normal, but the good news is that the benefits of exercise for your condition and your cardiovascular system remain substantial and definitely worth it.

Most of hypertension there is a cause that explains it, there is no illness behind. It is essential hypertension. And only one in 20 cases, there is the secondary hypertension, a symptom of kidney damage, adrenal gland tumors, coarctation of the aorta or dysfunction of the thyroid.

There are several factors that help the development of hypertension. Sometimes, the genetic component influences, hereditary. And with the old values increase blood pressure and hypertension cases. Obesity also weighs: 60% of hypertensive patients are obese. Alcohol also increases the tension. In some people, salt has a hypertensive effect.

The countries that consume too much salt or salty foods, have a high prevalence of hypertension. But at the individual behavior of stress is variable. A hypertensive salt are discouraged, and in some the decline occurs, but not always.

Stress is another ally of hypertension. Coffee raises blood pressure at the time, but seems to have no long term effect. Smoking is discouraged because the snuff with hypertension is a risk factor for atherosclerosis, and the combination of hypertension and snuff increases risk.

Hypertension runs sometimes without symptoms and is discovered incidentally. Is sometimes heralded by symptoms such as headache, palpitations, dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, or because getting urges to urinate several times at night. Already, more rarely, the manifestation of hypertension is a hypertensive crisis, with rising tension values, which causes breathlessness and fatigue, a headache, feel dizzy or nosebleed. May require hospital admission: you must manage the crisis and prevent complications. But the most dangerous of the effect of hypertension is slowly damage the body.

Heart, brain, kidneys, arteries and retina are the target organs: angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, sudden death, stroke (thrombosis, hemorrhage), and aortic aneurysms are complications reported hypertension. Therefore, they have higher mortality than people with normal tension. Hence the need for action when you have hypertension.

Often the person concerned, to being symptom, not collect sees the necessity to be treated. And sometimes they are given medications with side effects that make the hypertensive refuse treatment. Most hypertension is mild, but long-term harmful.

Control of blood pressure to prevent health problems and improve the quality of life.
High blood pressure, which is associated with increased cardiovascular disease not only is today one of the major health problems. His control is a method of prognosis and diagnosis of great value. Although not always known cause can be avoided various risk factors. In addition to change in lifestyle can almost immersed in stress, dietary patterns may contribute to a better control of blood pressure. There are plants that have traditionally been used in almost all cultures and periods, to regulate imbalances in blood pressure, both hypertension and low blood pressure.

In the “Seminar on Phytotherapy and circulatory heart”, held in Madrid in May 2000, was defined hypertension (HA) as a value of maximum or systolic pressure of 140-150 over, either minimum or diastolic pressure greater than 90-95. One could speak of hypertension after finding that a person is high on different days and records.

Factors associated with the HA, the Dr. Javier Macaroni referred to the inherited (in offspring of hypertensives is greater average blood pressure), environmental (more common in women aged 40-50 years, the importance of climate and lifestyle, food and labor), cardiovascular (increased vascular reactivity in the form of tachycardia) and renal (relating to the reabsorption of sodium).

Usually distinguishes between the essential or primary hypertension, the cause is unknown, the secondary HA, which may be a cause triggering the hypertensive process (cardiovascular, neurological, endocrine or renal).

The elevation in blood pressure occurs through two mechanisms. One is the increased volume of circulation, increasing systolic blood pressure, or maximum, which are effective substances which decrease the volume (diuretics). Another is that hypertension causes vasoconstriction due to increased peripheral resistance, which increases the diastolic or minimum and effectiveness which are substances that inhibit the sympathetic nervous system (vasodilators).

Have you ever stopped to think how long you do not take the strain? Maybe too much. An error must be controlled because this information regularly to prevent potential problems. In fact, more than four million Spanish people are unaware of their hypertension. Therefore, on the occasion of World Day of Hypertension, to be held on Tuesday May 17, the Spanish Heart Foundation (ESF) wishes to remind citizens the importance of regular monitoring of blood pressure . A silent disease We are facing a disease that may go unnoticed because their symptoms are not recognized until they have an associated condition.

Hypertension occurs when elevated blood pressure levels on a continuous or sustained, which causes the heart muscle increases to meet this extra effort and ends up being harmful because it is not accompanied by a corresponding increase in blood flow . A high percentage of patients do not even know they are hypertensive by what they can not avoid its consequences for health, “says Dr. María Victoria Cañadas Godoy, a cardiologist at USP San Camilo. Data are increasing hypertension, which affects Spanish 10 million according to the INE, the cardiovascular risk factor prevalence and incidence figures are very high: 15% of world population and 40% of the Spanish population (47% of men and 39% of women) have it. The high figure for Spain, as well as other countries with the same level of development is explained by an aging population, longer survival with cardiovascular disease and increased risk factors such as obesity.

By age, the most sufferers are over 65 years as the prevalence was 60%. Given these figures, Dr. Pilar Mazon, president of the Arterial Hypertension Section of the Spanish Society of Cardiology, says that “at any age is important to control blood pressure. Forget the false rumor that there was a few years ago that was not serious about the blood pressure increase with age. The blood pressure should be maintained within normal ranges for all ages to reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications. ” What about the young? The data indicate that in young children and the prevalence of hypertension is increasingly on the rise , is 30% of young people and between 3% and 7% of children who suffer the disease. “It is worrying that children and young people have the disease because it makes them more likely to suffer a cardiac event as a myocardial infarction, stroke or arrhythmia. This increase in prevalence rates is due to both poor nutrition, resulting in an overweight, as a familial predisposition for the disease, because if either of the two parents has hypertension possibilities that the child also develops disease is 45%, according to various studies, “concluded the doctor. The importance of taking the strain “Since the Spanish Heart Foundation is to raise awareness of the need to take your blood pressure regularly, either by going to a hospital or through mobile devices.

Through greater control of blood and good preventive measures, able to reduce the number of affected, “announced the doctor. The amounts considered normal systolic blood pressure (maximum) are between 120-129 mmHg and diastolic (minimum) between 80 and 84 mmHg. Prevention, your best friend The best treatment for hypertension is a good prevention to avoid their appearance. Key to this is to follow a heart-healthy lifestyle: not smoke. The snuff raises blood pressure and heart rate. In addition, hypertensive smokers multiply the detrimental effect of snuff. One thing for thought: stop smoking has positive effects outweigh any medication for hypertension. Beware of the alcohol. Moderate consumption of alcohol (one glass of wine a day with meals) may be beneficial, but if it causes excessive increase in blood pressure and other conditions prejudicial heart and other organs.

Control your weight. Overweight is a cause of hypertension. Therefore, lowering blood pressure decreases and reduces the risk of cardiovascular and diabetes. In form. The regular physical exercise gets lower blood pressure. It increases muscle mass and exercise capacity, helps control weight and reduce cardiovascular risk achieved. Practice heart-healthy diet. Hypertensive patients should reduce salt intake and foods containing it. Also need to eat fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, bread and other cereals. Finally, use olive oil as main fat and increasing intake of poultry and fish at the expense of red meat. Pharmacotherapy. If you can not settle for hypertension with the above recommendations, as you may need to continue drug treatment. The results do not always reflect an immediate reduction in blood pressure, so you need to wait a bit before considering a change to the doctor for medication.

Hypertension may be associated with an increased risk of mild cognitive impairment, according to a study by researchers at the Medical Center of Columbia University in New York City.

Mild cognitive impairment, which causes learning and thinking difficulties, has “attracted more interest in recent years, particularly as a means of identifying the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease as a target for the treatment and prevention,” wrote the authors of the study.

They followed 918 Medicare insured after 65 years (average age 76.3) who were assessed every eighteen months and followed for an average of 4.7 years. None of the participants had mild cognitive impairment at baseline, but 334 of them developed during the study period.

Of these, 160 developed amnestic mild cognitive impairment (which is related to low scores on the memory portions of neuropsychological tests) and 174 non-amnestic mild cognitive impairment. Hypertension was associated with an increased risk of all types of mild cognitive impairment, especially the non-amnestic mild cognitive impairment, the researchers said.

The findings are published in the December issue of Archives of Neurology.

“The mechanism by which blood pressure affects the risk of cognitive impairment or dementia remains unclear. Hypertension may cause cognitive impairment through cerebrovascular disease. Hypertension is a risk factor for subcortical lesions in the white matter commonly found in Alzheimer’s disease. Hypertension may also contribute to dysfunction of the blood brain barrier, which has been suggested that might have to do with the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Other possible explanations for the relationship are shared risk factors, including the formation of cell-damaging compounds known as free radicals, “wrote the authors.

“Our findings support the hypothesis that hypertension increases the risk of incident mild cognitive impairment, especially non-amnestic type”, concluded the researchers. “Prevention and treatment of hypertension could have a significant impact on reducing the risk of cognitive impairment.”

High blood pressure is an issue of great importance in the socio-health for three main reasons: the high number of individuals affected by this morbid form, the fact that this is one of the main risk factors for some of the most common diseases currently afflicting the population of countries with higher economic development, the high cost of health management in the prevention, treatment, Prognosis, periodic inspections.

In most European countries, the percentage allocated to spending on cardiovascular drugs is at the top, make exceptions for some countries such as Finland, Germany, Britain, Austria and Spain, where a second.

In Italy, drugs for the cardiovascular system are still the most prescribed therapeutic category. According to the report OsMED 2007, this therapeutic class is the first requirement is in place in terms of expenditure and quantity required. Moreover, the consumption of cardiovascular drugs is growing.

In 2007, the ratio OsMED drugs for the prevention of cardiovascular risk are part of the lion. Among the 30 active ingredients in most prescription, 19 belong to Class C or B and between 4 are ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers 3, 2 statins, beta-blockers and 2 ASA 2.
The more weight that continues to this therapeutic category than the others, is explained by the fact that cardiovascular disease is at the top to the prevalence and availability of effective treatments. Hypertension prevalence in fact around 30% in the general population and, together with heart failure is the disease that requires greater use of drugs.

Increasing the pressure over the maximum limits in damage in some organs, called target organ: the stretch of the vessel wall, overwork the heart muscle, abnormal renal of brain and eye.

It is shown that the longer the pressure remains high is the highest risk of complications. These changes result in:

* Thickening of the walls of the heart muscle (as if the muscle was subjected to “body building“) and this in turn can lead to problems of heart failure up to, or myocardial ischemia, until dalliance ’stroke.
* Alterations of cardiac structures, particularly the dilation of the aorta, initially up to mild aortic valve insufficiency.

Damage to roads due to the continuous stretching of their walls that causes two types of changes: small lesions of the inner cell layer, which opens the door to infiltration and the deposition of fat in the wall and then atherosclerosis; the reaction of the muscular layer thickening of the arteries in certain districts vascular tree.

In turn, these changes cause vascular damage in the structures that supply: the brain may reduce oxygenation of the nerve cells with their failure, to dementia, or cause the rupture of a vessel and lead to strokes, kidney to alter the function of this organ and thus the accumulation or loss in the urine of particular substances, to cause the lowering of the ocular view.

Risk Factors

Primary or essential hypertension, although not identified a precise cause, there are some factors that may support or enhance disease: risk factors. These fall into two categories:

Factors that can not be amended:

* Familiarity: at least one family member is suffering from hypertension.
Age *: the risk of hypertension increased with age in parallel.
* Gender: women until menopause rarely have hypertension, after menopause the incidence is the same for both sexes and further increased in women after age 65.
Breed *: The black race meets with hypertension more often than white.

Factors that can be corrected:

* Overweight and obesity: increased body mass often leads to increased blood pressure to bring the food to a greater number of cells.
* Smoking: nicotine absorbed by smoking causes a contraction of the vessels and then mild, but sudden pressure, cigarette smoke also contains many substances harmful to the endothelium that facilitate the formation of atherosclerotic plaques.
* Impaired renal sensitivity to salt and sodium intake: some patients are more sensitive to sodium retention leading to renal water retention and thus the increase of body fluids, can be added to this alteration in recruiting potassium.
* Lack of physical activity: the little sport often accompanied by weight gain, an altered fat metabolism and nutrition too.
* Alcohol abuse: several studies have shown that intake of 1-2 glasses of wine a day protects the arteries arteriosclerosis, excessive consumption of alcohol is often accompanied by a lifestyle that leads in turn to other factors risk in addition to being directly detrimental for the heart
* Stress: stress causes a sudden brief increase in pressure, chronic stress causes an increase in pressure more stable, also because it often involves a particular lifestyle and is associated with unbalanced diet and excessive intake of coffee and smoke.

What is the most antihypertensive therapy protects the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular system? Have talked about names in cardiology authoritative speakers at the symposium “Optimizing to hypertensive therapy reduces cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risks” of the ESC Congress 2005 which was held in Stockholm.

The antihypertensive reduces vascular risk?

Once again in this authoritative occasion was highlighted as the main goal of treatment of hypertensive disease should not be considered the sole reduction of blood pressure to reach the target values recommended by recent guidelines, but a significant decrease risk of vascular disease of the heart, brain and related systems.

Although the last major international trials have however shown a significant reduction of vascular risk in correlation to a reduction in blood pressure in hypertensive patients, Bryan Williams, professor at the University of Leicester, in the first speech of the symposium, it was initially asked whether all types of medication available today are just as effective, not only in reducing blood pressure, but also in the entity of the reduction in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risk.

Is it possible that some groups of drugs are able to reduce the risk more significantly than others, despite equally effective in controlling blood pressure, thanks to ancillary benefits that accompany the principal action of certain substances (eg , activity on endothelial function, renal protection, control of values and anti-inflammatory efficacy of lipemia). But this is currently only a hypothesis can not yet proven. More plausible is instead the possibility that some antihypertensive drugs (such as blockers of the renin-angiotensin system), or some combination of therapeutic classes, are able to delay the onset of diabetes mellitus or to obtain more evidence of harm reduction ’s body linked to high blood pressure or prevent it from developing as it has been demonstrated on left ventricular hypertrophy
